Finding sunglasses that suit your face shape is essential to look and feel your best, but it’s no mean feat. With so many different sunglasses shapes and styles available, it can feel impossible to work out which pair will best suit you. Luckily, our new virtual try on tool is here to help!
Before you start virtually trying sunglasses on your face though, it’s important to get to know your face a little better! Do you know what kind of face shape you have? Here are some top tips for determining your face shape, and how to find the perfect sunglasses and glasses to suit you:
Oval Face
If you have a long face that is well-balanced with rounded features and a forehead that is only slightly wider than your jaw then you have an oval face. Lucky you! Oval faces can wear almost all sunglasses and glasses styles and shapes and always look fantastic.
To really optimise the shape of your face, try a pair of oversized mirrored aviators. Avoid narrow rectangle or square frames, which could make your eyes look narrower than they are.
Here are some examples of great frames to suit your face:
Round Face
If you have a face that is soft and circular which appears to be almost equal in width and length then you have a round face. Look in the mirror and draw a line around your face: if the shape you create is a circle then you have a round face shape.
Rounder faces tend to have softer features and a gentle jawline, meaning that they need to create balance when choosing sunglasses.
When using our try on tool we recommend that you look for sunglasses or glasses with a rectangle shape or more angular details. Cat eye sunglasses and glasses would also work well. These will create the illusion of a longer face.
Avoid round or oversized glasses, which will only make your face look rounder and your features look smaller.
Here are some examples of great frames to suit your face:
Heart Face
Do you have a broad forehead and wide cheekbones that narrow into a small and delicate chin? Then, just like Reece Witherspoon, you have a heart shape face. Considered to be one of the most desirable face shapes, those with heart faces should choose glasses that compliment it rather than disguise it.
When choosing sunglasses to suit your face, look for bottom heavy frames, and round frames. We also love classic wrap frames on heart shaped faces (Think Elle’s pink wrap arounds in Legally Blonde!).
Avoid aviators if you don’t want to exaggerate and emphasise the shape of your face.
Here are some examples of great frames to suit your face:
Square Face
Do you have a wide jawline and a square chin? Is your face equal in width and length but with clearly defined features and a deep forehead? Then you have a square face shape. Draw a line around your face and you will find that it creates a square.
Square face shapes tend to have angular features, meaning that the most flattering sunglasses and glasses will soften these by creating curves and giving the face length.
If you want to try sunglasses on your face then round and oval frames are best chosen for their feature-softening properties, whilst sunglasses with sides set at the top of the frame and extra details to the top corner of the glasses (such as embellishment or metal hardware) will draw attention away from a wider forehead.
Avoiding trying on sunglasses or glasses that have thin frames or that are square in shape, as these will only emphasise your face shape.
Here are some examples of great frames to suit your face:
Aviator
If you’re looking for sunglasses to suit your face shape then look to the aviator: this is a popular shape that has quickly earnt icon status.
Aviators were originally worn by pilots before being popularized by Tom Cruise (thank you Top Gun!) leading a generation of men and women to don the frames and call themselves Maverick.
Their distinctive teardrop shape, clean lines and oversized status means that aviators look great on almost anyone, although they are best suited to individuals with square or oval faces, thanks to their feature-softening nature.
Wayfarer
The Wayfarer has been popular since the 1960s and this classic, timeless sunglasses shape never goes out of fashion. Another style that looks good on almost any face shape (just ask The Blues Brothers), these are incredibly versatile frames.
Now favoured by rock stars and festival aficionados, you’ll find high-profile celebs such as Ellie Goulding, Taylor Swift and all of the Artic Monkeys rocking a Wayfarer this season (and the one after that!).
Rectangle
If you’re shopping for the perfect sunglasses to suit your round or square face then look to a rectangular frame. These are frames that are wider than they are tall, meaning that they will create the illusion of a longer face.
With a cool, sporty aesthetic, rectangle frames are often favoured by hikers, skaters and adventure enthusiasts. And, of course, by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator!
Round
Round sunglasses were first created in the 1940s, and they have been in and out of vogue ever since. They are ideal for softening square or heart shaped faces by introducing gentle curves, although anyone can wear them.
Originally frame-less, modern round sunglasses can be chosen with or without a frame: there are endless possibilities to choose sunglasses that are as unique as you are.
These frames have had an incredible celebrity following over the years: from John Lennon to Malcom X. From Lady Gaga to Princess Di. If you choose to sport a round frame then you’re joining a pretty special and elite club!
Wraps
If you’re an athlete or enthusiastic runner (or just want to look like you are!) then you need a pair of wrap sunglasses. Wrap sunglasses are streamlined, lightweight, and aerodynamically designed to increase your speed.
Wraparound sunglasses cover all your eyes, offering more UV protection that most other frames on the market. They also have spring-loaded arms that will ensure they stay on your face no matter how active you are.
Why not make like an Olympian and choose wrap sunglasses for all of your sporty endeavours?
